July 4th will have sizzling temps - but not many fireworks

With the high temps and continued drought - most of the state has a burn ban - which is putting a damper on many areas and personal fireworks celebrations on July 4th.

Here is a link to the state wide burn ban info and it is updated constantly - so just like "call before you dig" - be sure you "read before you light".

Whether we have fireworks or not - there is a lot to celebrate on July 4th!  A little background on the date:

Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Columbus, Indiana - Bartholomew County - Architectural Mecca

Columbus_city_hall
I have only recently discovered Columbus, Indiana and Bartholomew County - even though I am a born and bred Hoosier.  It is a beautiful city with quite a history and has numerous Architechtural landmarks.  The most recent added to the list is the former home of James Irwin Miller.  The Miller family founded the Cummins Engine Company in Columbus which is now an International powerhouse corporation.

I've included some detail below about Columbus in general and the Miller home.  There is a link to the Miller home website for more info in regards to taking the tour by clicking HERE.

Today, Columbus is ranked sixth in the nation by the American Institute of Architects for architectural innovation and design. National Geographic Traveler ranked Columbus as America’s most significant historic place on the strength of its architectural heritage. There are more than 70 buildings by noted modern architects—such as I. M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, Robert Venturi, Richard Meier, John Carl Warnecke and Harry Weese—in the city, as well as public art works by internationally renowned architects and artists.

"America’s Most Significant Modernist House" - Travel + Leisure

Miller_house
Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1953, Miller House expands upon an architectural tradition developed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—epitomizing the international Modernist aesthetic—with an open and flowing layout, flat roof and stone and glass walls. The rooms, configured beneath a grid pattern of skylights supported by cruciform steel columns, are filled with textiles that feature strong colors and playful patterns. Amid the residence’s large geometric gardens, its grandest feature is an allée of honey locust trees that runs along the west side of the house. In 2000, the Miller House became the first National Historic Landmark to receive its designation while one of its designers, Dan Kiley, was still living and while still occupied by its original owners. The house showcases the work of leading 20th-century architects and designers: Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard and Dan Kiley.

Today, the property offers visitors the opportunity to experience one of the finest expressions of American modernism, an integration of house and landscape that draws upon historical precedents without repeating them, enfolding them in a compelling composition of forms and spaces that captures the genius of its designers, the aspirations of its owners, and the spirit of their time.

Joseph Irwin Miller (1909-2004) was born into a prominent Columbus, Indiana, family with business interests in banking, industry, and real estate. Irwin Miller attended Yale University, majoring in Greek and Latin and graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1931. He then received a master’s degree from Oxford University in 1933.

In 1934, Irwin Miller began working at Cummins Engine Company—founded by his great- uncle—which builds diesel engines in Columbus, Indiana. His career began when the firm was still small enough that his responsibilities included opening the daily mail though his innovations in management, marketing, and production brought the firm to profitability and he is credited as a major influence in the company’s growth. Although beset with early difficulties, under Irwin Millers leadership the company persevered to become the leading independent diesel manufacturer in the world (2006 reported sales were $11.4 billion). In addition to being a patron of modern architecture, Irwin Miller was a philanthropist and industrialist well known for his civic activism.

Howl at the Moon - Did you know there is a Wolf Park in Lafayette, IN?

Wolf Park
4004 E. 800 N.
Battle Ground, IN  47920
765-567-2205
www.wolfpark.org

I have now been educated on wolves.....at a wolf park in Lafayette believe it or not.  I got to see 3 wolves up close and personal.  A couple did some very nice posing for the crowd while the third was chewing away on the leg of some dead animal.
It is an amazing facility with lots of opportunity for involvement, interaction and education.  You can "adopt a wolf", name a puppy, take a guided tour or come and howl with the wolves at night.
Wolf_park_1
This facility was started back in 1972 by Dr. Erich Klinghammer when he brought 2 wolves for ethology research from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.
In 1976 they adopted the name "Wolf Park" for the facility
1977 saw the first litter of pups born at the Park
Wolf_park
In 1993 they built the 2nd largest wolf enclosure in the United States
2001 saw the addition of a gift shop and bleachers for the viewing area of the enclosure
May - November they offer guided tours Tues-Sun between 1-5pm and Howl nights on Fri & Sat at 7:30pm
Dec - April they only offer Howl night on Saturday at 7:30pm
It is truly a unique experience and the animals are majestic!  The pups are absolutely adorable!

PLAY BALL - Wow, what a plan for Westfield, IN

Grand Park: The Vision

Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, is a planned 350-acre development, sure to become a family sports destination like no other. This thoughtfully-designed sports campus will feature a full-range of championship-level outdoor facilities for baseball, softball and field sports including soccer, football, rugby, field hockey and lacrosse; a multi-purpose indoor facility; common areas and green space. The fields will be surrounded by dining, retail and entertainment venues, all geared toward supporting and enhancing the family sports atmosphere and experience. More than 500,000 sports visitors are expected to participate in or attend events at the facility annually. Building on the state of Indiana’s long and storied sports tradition, Grand Park will be a premier location for athletes, visitors and the local community alike.

The Hoosier Edge

Sport is an essential part of the state of Indiana, and the spirit of its people. Here, there are places that have captured the imagination of an entire nation. Places that range from the tiny town of Milan to the sprawling grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Our name is inextricably linked with some of the greatest names in sports history, among them, Bird, Unser, Wooden, Rockne, Miller and Manning.

Best of all, sports of every stripe and color are alive and well throughout Indiana today. The state welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to the largest sporting event in the world, the Indy 500. It has hosted more than 400 Collegiate and Olympic National and International Championships. It is home to the NCAA, USA Gymnastics, USA Track & Field, USA Diving, and dozens more governing bodies. Indiana is a place where the pure fun, camaraderie and excitement of sports competition for the entire family…is right at home.

This strong and vibrant sports culture is something that the City of Westfield will build upon and enhance with the development of Grand Park, bringing yet another dimension of sports competition to a state that celebrates and embraces sport in a way few other places ever could.

Timeline to Completion

Construction Plans out for bid: Mid/Late Summer of 2011
Construction Start: Fall of 2011
Play: Early Spring of 2014

Facts & Figures

GRAND PARK

  • Of the more than 500,000 sports visitors expected to participate in or attend events at the facility annually, approximately 50,000 will travel from out of the area resulting in an additional $18 million in visitor spending each year.
  • Grand Park will serve the sporting needs of over 4,000 Westfield youths, as well as thousands of additional visiting tournament players and regional recreation participants each year.

Pacers Pride - Indiana Professional Basketball shining bright

For the first time in years, the Pacers are in the playoffs - and it's a team you can be proud of!!!

Luckily, Meta Peace is someone elses problem now.....

Pacers_2

I  went to my first game in years this week.  They played the Detroit Pistons.  We had great (and affordable!!) seats on the club level.  They have waiters and waitresses that will take your order and bring your drinks and food - how great is that???

The game has a lot of action, the fans were engaged, fun activities during every time out and break. T-shirt cannons, Rowdy, Pacemates - a trifecta of entertainment.  It was nice to see so many families with young kids - just like the good old days.

Kudos to Larry Bird and Frank Vogel for putting together a true "team". No super star needed. Believe me - I was one of the biggest Reggie Miller fan, but this roster has strength throughout.  This night they had a lot of B team players on the court and they played a strong game and won!

Pacers
I heard that Warren Central has been unable to schedule their graduation because of the Pacers being in the playoffs - since they hold graduation at the Fieldhouse.  We've been hoping for this inconvenience for years!!!!

I'm not a sports fan - but I am a Hoosier fan, so let's get out there and support our team!

April 15th - Everyones favorite date - Tax Tips for buyers and sellers

Tax season is upon us and for those who purchased or sold a home last year, there are a number of tax deductions for which you may qualify.

Tax_pic

For starters, the Internal Revenue Service says that if you have a gain from the sale of your main home, you may be able to exclude up to $250,000 of the gain from your income as a single tax filer, or $500,000 on a joint return in most cases.

Here are some other factors to keep in mind:

1: Much of the interest paid on a mortgage is tax-deductible. A married couple filing jointly can deduct all of their interest on a maximum of $1 million in mortgage debt secured by a first or second home.

2: Real estate broker commissions, title insurance, legal fees, advertising costs, administrative costs, and inspection fees are all considered selling costs and may be used to reduce one’s taxable capital gain by the amount of the selling costs.

3: Refinanced mortgage points are deductible, but not all at once. Homeowners who refinance can immediately write off the balance of the old points and begin to amortize the new. Interest paid on a home equity loan or similar line of credit may also be deducted.

4: Points and origination fees on a home loan, which are paid during the purchase of a home, are generally tax-deductible in full for the year that they were paid.

5: Qualifying capital improvements can sometimes be deducted, including costs of a new roof, fence, swimming pool, garage, porch, built-in appliances, insulation, heating/cooling systems or landscaping.

6: If you move because of a new job, you may be able to deduct some of your moving costs. To qualify for these deductions you must meet several IRS requirements, including that your new job must be at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your previous job. Moving-cost deductions can include travel or transportation costs, lodging expenses, and fees for storing your household goods.

7: Property taxes are fully deductible from your income. If you have an impound or escrow account, you can’t deduct the money held for property taxes until the money is actually used to pay your property taxes. And a city or state property tax refund reduces your federal deduction by a like amount.

8: For those who took advantage of the first-time homebuyer credit the past two years: If within 36 months of the date of purchase, the property is no longer used as your principal residence, you are required to repay the credit.

9: Another important tip for those who moved is to make sure you update your address with the IRS and the U.S. Postal Service to ensure you receive refunds or correspondence from the IRS.

Since tax laws change every year and certain tax deductions become available while others phase out, it’s always a good idea to speak with a professional tax consultant about these and other considerations.
