Did you know? Strange laws in Indiana.....

These laws are still on the books in Indiana...so beware!!!

It's illegal to sell your child (is there a section for that on ebay?)

An ice-fishing hole may not be more than 12" in diameter - nice to think about on this hot and muggy day

A mattress cannot be filled with trash (but bed bugs are ok?)

Human cloning is against public policy

Hotel guests must be supplied undersheets big enought to cover entire bed (I'll sleep better now)

Hotel
In Indianapolis, it is illegal to throw a rock at a bird except in self-defense (those Canadian Geese can be wicked!)

You cannot abandon a vertebrate animal

You cannot fish with your bare hands (wear gloves)

Fishing

Every hotel guest must be given a freshly laundered pillowcase (to go with sheets that fit)

Dyeing baby chicks is a criminal offense (and not easy, either!)

You cannot spike a tree

Smart Parking in Indy - and why not just rent the whole street?

PARK SMART - Indy and Broad Ripple
The Indianapolis and Broad Ripple area now have over 1300 parking spaces with sensors connected to a parking app you can download on your smart phone.  The app is called "Parker" and provides real-time info to guide you to open and available parking spaces.  There is even an optional voice feature that can provide audible queues when a space is available nearby.  How cool is that?  No more having to drive in endless circles waiting for that perfect spot.
This system is available in many big cities across the country - so you'll be able to put it to good use.
Click HERE or go to www.parkindy.com for more info and downloading the app.

GEORGIA STREET IS FOR RENT!!!  Indy
Remember Georgia St during the Super Bowl?  Well, now it can host your next mega event. It is a 3 block street where you can rent the whole thing or any part.  Inviting 25,000 people to your event - no problem!  Under 5,000 - then you will only need either the east block or west block.
There is a 2 day minimum rental and the cost is from $1,500 to $12,500 depending on how many blocks you use.  Non-profits can qualify for a 25% discount.
Get more details HERE or go to www.indy.gov/specialevents
Make your next event memorable!!!!

Blood Drives in Indiana - Give the Gift of Life in September

The Indiana Blood Centers provide blood to over 60 community hospitals throughout Indiana. This is your opportunity to donate and save a life. And it's renewable! Once you give, your body will give you an automatic refill!  My Dad was a card carrying, award winning donor - and I strive to live up to his legacy by donating at every opportunity.

Outdoor Cooking Comparison - get your grill on!!!

For all those grill masters out there, here are some basics to compare when comparing how to cook your next meal outside:

Charcoal_grill

Charcoal Grill:  Believed by many to offer the best BBQ flavor, can be inconsistent on the heat level, it is not speedy to get ready - so have some appetizers ready, takes constant attention but is reasonably priced. ($50-$200+) Will have to purchase charcoal and lighter fluid.

Gas_grill

Gas Grill:  Doesn't get as hot as charcoal, so it doesn't get that charbroiled flavor, constant temp, heats up fast and is ready to go at the last minute, as easy as flipping a switch, can be costly depending on features desired. ($300 - $5K) Requires a propane tank and refills as needed.

Smoker:  Excellent flavor and delivers tender meat, consistent temp control, these are intended to cook slowly - that's why you use them - so it's not for the impatient! Takes a little setup time but can feed an army. Reasonably priced. ($300 - 1k)

Pizza Oven:  For those wanting the old fashioned rustic flavors and have a big budget. Great savory wood fired oven flavor, preheating can take time and you need to keep an eye on your food. Pricey $3K-$6K

Grill_food

Start small and build your style and expertise before launching into a full blown outdoor kitchen!  Many people see grilling out as a summer activity while others enjoy using them year round. Find some favorite meat rubs and keep them on hand. And don't limit your grills to meat - vegetables are awesome on the grill!

Throw a Great Garage Sale!!!

First off - we have FREE Garage sale signs in our Fishers office - just stop by during office hours Monday - Friday and pick them up.

Garage_sale
Out with the Old.........

1.  Price things to sell:  accept the fact you'll never get what you paid for it and make it "a deal".  Do you want to have to transport it to Goodwill or back in the house at the end of the day?  Think about marking things 1/2 price at 2pm.  When we had a garage sale to clean out my inlaws house, at 4pm we took in the few things we weren't willing to give away and marked everything "free".  We had people filling up their trunks and back seats.  We ended up with NOTHING!!!!  No mess, no packing things up to Goodwill, no trucking things back in the house.  It was fantastic.

2.  Simplify your prices - use color coding and have preset prices on a chart.  That way you don't have to spend hours writing prices on individual items.

3.  Entice the customers - use hot ticket items like tooks, books, furniture easily visible, but at the top of the drive so they have to walk by everything else.

4.  Get the Word Out - get our free signs and post them everywhere ahead of time.  Post on Craigslist (it's free) include the date and time.  Use balloons on the day of the sale.

5.  Be organized - separate toys from clothes from housewares from electronics.  Buyers will spend more time looking and will be more likely to buy if the items are well organized.

It's a cleansing feeling - and once you start pocketing that money...it becomes addictive!

I-69 Exits will be Renumbered - More Miles, New Numbers

This will challenge my learning curve.  I've always given directions to my office saying that "you get on I-69 north from 465 and get off on exit 5.  Someday that will no longer be a correct statement!  Interstate exits in Indiana are numbered according to the mileage markers starting south to north and west to east.

I-69

Fishers Chamber of Commerce Announces Information Meeting for

Planned Renumbering of I-69 Exits

Fishers, IN, July 9, 2012. The Fishers Chamber of Commerce in partnership with INDOT and the Asher Agency will host an informative meeting regarding the renumbering of all I-69 exits planned to begin in 2012.

The project titled 'MORE MILES. NEW NUMBERS.' is the longest contiguous new highway construction project anywhere in the United States. When complete, I-69 will span the entire Hoosier state from north to south adding 184 miles to its route in Indiana.

Extending the interstate system means existing mile markers and exit numbers on the northern leg of I-69 must be updated. The meeting will explain what INDOT is doing to minimize the impact to businesses and motorists.

This event is open to the public and will be held Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. in the Fishers Train Station Meeting Room. For additional information contact Carol Doehrman at 317-578-0700 or cdoehrman@fisherschamber.com.

THIRSTY!!!!!!!

From The Associated Press: The corn stalks in some unirrigated fields in Posey County in southwestern Indiana are so frail from the drought that any rain or wind might just knock them over, an extension service educator says. "Our corn is pretty well done. Any rain we get now is going to help just a very small percentage of the corn crop. We feel like our yields have already taken the hit we're going to get, regardless of how much rain we get between now and this fall," Jon Neufelder said Thursday. Posey County and neighboring Vanderbugh County are the only two Indiana counties listed as being in "exceptional drought" on the new U.S. Drought Monitor report. The report shows nearly 30 percent of Indiana is in severe drought, adding Indianapolis and several nearby counties to the list that already included counties in northeastern and southwestern parts of the state. Overall, more than 80 percent of the state is listed in extreme drought. Despite that, a group of state officials met Thursday and decided against expanding the water shortage warning area issued earlier for 32 counties — 18 in the northeast and north-central parts of the state, and 14 in the southwest corner. Phil Bloom, spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources, said the officials decided to wait and reassess the situation early next week, with the state expecting to get some rain. The National Weather Service is predicting a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms in the Indianapolis area on Friday and Saturday and 40 percent chance on Sunday. In northern Indiana, South Bend had a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. In southern Indiana, Evansville showers and thunderstorms were likely Friday and there was a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday. Weather service hydrologist Al Shipe, though, was doubtful it would provide much relief. "We're at the point now of, show me the rain before we get too optimistic," he said. After 16 straight days with temperatures of 90 degrees or higher in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, the highs Friday are expected to be in the 80s. The streak of 90-plus degree days was the longest ever in Fort Wayne and the fourth longest for Indianapolis. Indiana farmers in 55 drought-stricken counties got some good news then they found out they will be eligible for disaster assistance under changes made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA has announced it was streamlining the process for farmers to apply for disaster help, making more than 1,000 counties nationwide eligible for assistance. A map released by the USDA shows primary disasters are being declared in 36 counties in Indiana and 19 contiguous counties. The eligible primary counties are in 20 northeastern counties — as far west as St. Joseph and Pulaski counties and as far south as Carroll and Howard counties — and in 16 southwestern counties — as far east as Crawford County and as far north as Sullivan, Greene and Lawrence counties. Farmers in adjacent counties also are eligible. Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman said the state will continue to monitor counties that have not yet received disaster designation and will ask the USDA to add counties to the list. Water restrictions take effect Friday in Indianapolis and some other towns and cities. The restrictions in Indianapolis include a ban on washing vehicles except at commercial car washes, filling swimming pools and installing new landscaping. The restrictions do not apply to vegetable or flower gardens or to nurseries, commercial car washes, golf courses, parks or people with wells. Water companies and others that use more than 100,000 gallons of water a day that are in the 32 counties under a water shortage warning are supposed to voluntarily cut back on water use by 10 to 15 percent. The rest of the state is under a water shortage watch, meaning users should try to cut back by 5 percent. "Everybody can do something to help stretch the water supply," Bloom said. Low water levels caused by the drought are leading to reports of fish kills throughout Indiana, Bloom said. The kills are being caused by warming water and low water levels. He says there have been reports of kills ranging from five fish in the 18- to 24-inch range in the Tippecanoe River near Winamac in Pulaski County, 60 miles southwest of South Bend, to hundreds of fish at Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area in Johnson County, 30 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Bloom says there might be one positive coming out of the low water levels, though. He says the DNR is receiving reports of Asian carp becoming trapped in backwaters off the Wabash River in southern Indiana and dying off. "I don't have any information on numbers or precise locations," he said. "It's been well-documented the potential fish those fish can bring and do bring. So if they're getting trapped up there and dying, that's a good thing."

It PAYS to be a Hoosier !!!!

July 3, 2012

News Release

Money

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Governor Mitch Daniels said today that a preliminary look at fiscal data shows Indiana will close the 2012 Fiscal Year with reserves of more than $2 billion and a structural surplus, meaning annual revenue in excess of annual expenses, of more than $500 million.

With reserves totaling at least 14 percent of the state’s budget, most Hoosier taxpayers will receive their first automatic taxpayer refund when they file their state taxes in 2013. The Indiana General Assembly approved the governor’s plan for an automatic taxpayer refund in 2011.

The refund will clearly be in excess of $100 for a single filer or $200 for a joint return. The exact amount will not be ascertained until the fall when the estimate will be made of how many tax returns will qualify. The median income tax payment was a little over $800 last year, so the refund will amount to more than 10 percent for the typical Hoosier.

Because the state’s reserves exceed 10 percent of the upcoming year’s budget, half of the excess will be returned to taxpayers and the other half will go to further strengthen several of the state’s pension funds. That means the pension funds, already rated among the nation’s most secure, will receive at least $300 million.

For Fiscal Year 2013, the state is projecting a structural surplus of more than $400 million, resulting in the state’s reserves again exceeding $2 billion.

Indiana fiscal facts during the Daniels administration: Indiana has its first Triple-A credit rating Indiana's expenditures have grown at less than one-quarter of the rate of the previous decade Indiana has the fewest state employees per capita in the country Indiana has paid down previous debt 43 percent

o Indiana repaid more than $750 million of debt previously owed to schools, universities and local governments

o Indiana repaid a $63 million loan to the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund that originated in the 1990s

o Indiana paid off the 50 year old bonds on the Indiana Toll Road, almost $200 million worth. Indiana has the lowest burden per household to fully fund public pensions in the country

o Indiana has the smallest unfunded liability per capita for retiree health care of any state

o At 6.75 percent, Indiana's pensions have the most conservative investment return assumptions of any state and is the only state below 7 percent Indiana’s combined pension and long-term debt liability as a percentage of GDP is the 2nd lowest in the country
