New Area Code coming to Indianapolis in September of 2016

The switch is currently scheduled for September 17, 2016. This will be for new phone numbers only, because State officials say that 317 is set to run out of numbers. This means that you will have to begin using 10-digit phone numbers even for local calls.
Starting October 17 2016, new telephone lines or services "may" be assigned numbers using the new area code of 463 - which stands for IND, by the way.
Officials state there will be a 6 month grace period starting March 19, 2016 to give consumers time to adjust. Calls that are currently local will continue to be local, even when dialing a 10 digit number. Long distance numbers will require dialing 1 before the 10 digit number.
In the meantime - be sure you update your info to include your area code on personal ID tags (like on your luggage), stationary, checks, alarm systems, etc.
