I feel somehow un-American or un-Hoosier by not posting on the Super Bowl this week. BUT - I have placed a link to www.indianapolissuperbowl.com right here.

I am not a sports fan - but I am TOTALLY excited about the Super Bowl events and what it brings to not only Indianapolis - but our entire state!

I love my hometown and can't wait to share it with the world.

BUT - since I have posted several times on the Super Bowl, and because we have offices throughout the state, I wanted to share an interesting list I came across. Many of us make New Years Resolutions in order to improve ourselves throughout the upcoming year. By now, many of us have given up on most if not all. This following list is a very do-able list of Resolutions that have to do with housing.

10. Be less stressed - in other words, use more maintenance free materials when you are improving or remodeling.

9. Get fit - dive into those remodeling projects yourself. Tote that barge, haul that bale....

8. Spend more time with family - include the whole family in an improvement project. That not only helps fufill this resolution, but also #9

7. Drink less - turn the water off while brushing your teeth, take shorter showers, cut back on lawn watering

6. Volunteer - support your community projects. When your community improves - it increases the value of your own home

5. Get organized - clean out those closets, donate, have a garage sale, remove clutter (less to dust!)

4. Learn something new - take a class on home finance or a DIY home project

3. Get out of debt - learn how to budget for your home and improvements

2. Quit smoking - change your filter furnaces, install an air purifier

1. Lose weight - cut back on energy usage. Turn off lights if you're not in the room, turn off computers, unplug items you're not using, get more efficient light bulbs, make sure your windows and doors are caulked.

Be in the Know - Mass Transit & Right To Work

A couple things to pay attention to in 2012 and beyond;

First - the Central indiana Transit Task Force revealed a plan to meet the public transportation needs for Indianapolis and the surrounding counties. The first phase would be completed by 2021 and include:

Double the amount of local bus service in Marion County and add service in Hamilton County

Four bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors featuring hybrid or electric vehicles with dedicated lanes

Five express bus routes with limited stops and quick access

Frequent bus circulator service in downtown Indy

Multiple transfer hubs throughout region

Rail service in NE rail corridor from Indianapolis to Noblesville

The proposal is in the hands of the Indiana General Assembly and bears watching. The price tag is estimated at $1.3 billion. The task force is proposing a .3% increase in county option income tax in Marion and Hamilton counties.

Benefits are stated as:

Time savings, improved traffic flow, affordable transportation options, access to public services, vehicle operation savings for travelers, reduced pollution, increased property values near transit stations, reduction in accidents.

Second - Right to Work Legislation

House Speaker Brian Bosma and Senate President Pro Tem David Long have both labeled it their top priority this session and the Governor is saying it would make the state more economically competitive.

This is not the venue to do anything except draw your attention to the fact that it will be up for debate and to get the facts from both sides and make your own informed decision.

I remember Bob Gregory used to predict how many days it would snow.....and never got it right. Remember - it's Indiana. There's always a week somewhere in the midst of winter that it breaks 50-60 degrees and the motorcycles hit the street. Then the next week we are shoveling just to get out of our driveways. I happened to be a student at IU during the blizzard of 1978 and they cancelled classes for the first time in 50 years! I've lived through ice storms and other weather phenomenon....and have never had to make a mad rush to the grocery for milk and eggs. Embrace it and enjoy!

Santa Claus, Indiana - World Class Destination

Forbes magaine has declared Santa Claus, Indiana as one of the "World's Top Christmas
Destinations". Did you hear that New York? Chicago? Paris? Yep - Southern Indiana is right there with you!

They gave them this honor based on the fact that "they enthusiastically embrace the role, with a wide array of Santa-themed shops and attractions". These attractions incluse Holiday World & Splashin Safari, Santa Claus Museum, Santa's Candy Castle and the Santa Claus Post Office.
We join ranks with New York City, Amsterdam (Netherlands), Cologne (Germany), Boston, Napapiiri (Finland), Rome (Italy), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Aspen and Paris (France). Not bad company!

The Legend of the L.S. Ayres Cherub

In 1946 WWII was over and many were returning home from military service. One of those was Virginia Holmes. She was a prize-winning commercial artist coming back to Indianapolis to begin her job in the advertising department of L.S. Ayres, a downtown Indianapolis department store. She was assigned the task of putting together their 1946 Christmas catalog, but merchandise was still in short supply so Holmes created whimsical cherubs to fill the somewhat empty pages. These cherubs charmed the public and began a tradition that continues today.

The response to the cherubs was so great that Ayres brought them back in their 1947 holiday advertising. 1947 was their 75th Anniversary so they commissioned nationally recognized Indianapolis sculptor David Rubins to create a bronze cherbu for the store's landmark clock, located on the outside of their building on the corner of Washignton and Meridian streets.

The story goes that the whimsical Cherub mysteriously appeared atop the clock on Thanksgiving Eve of 1947 to keep a watchful eye on the shoppers until Santa took over on Christmas Eve. Every year since, thousands have watched for the appearance of the Cherub perched atop the famous clock.

In 1986, L.S. Ayres was purchased by May Department Store Co and in 1992 they decided to move the Cherub to their headquarters in St. Louis. There was such a tremendous public outcry when the Cherub did not appear that season the May Company donated the Cherub to the City of Indianapolis in 1994. Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. is now the legal guardian of the Cherub and assures us of our heavenly shopping guardian for the future.

When you go downtown this year to look at all the beautiful lights - be sure to swing by the corner of Washington and Meridian streets and look for the Cherub. Share the story with your kids and make it a part of your Christmas tradition.

Indiana makes Thanksgiving Top Ten

Well, it may not be a list we want to be on - but I found it amusing!

State Farm Insurance has compiled a list of the top ten states that have the most cooking fires on Thanksgiving. Indiana came in at #9 - so in the interest of keeping everyone safe this Turkey Day, we wanted to draw attention to this fact in hopes that we can get off this list!

Evidently, cooking fire claims more than double on Thanksgiving compared to any other day in November. The main culprit of course being the deep fryer.

Note to all: Do not leave your fryers unattended - and make sure your fire extinguisher is close at hand and ready to go!

Here's the top ten list..... (cue David Letterman)

Also - be aware that this annual event is going to cost more at the grocery store this year. Indiana Farm Bureau conducted an informal survey of grocery prices on the typical Thanksgiving items:

Turkey (16lb) $23.68 (up from $20.48)

Stuffing (14oz) $2.50 (up from $2.48)

Pumpkin pie filling $3.11 (from $2.72)

Sweet potatoes are actually down! $2.94 (from $2.97)

Rolls are down also! $1.86 (from $2.12)

Milk $3.15 (from $2.83)

Cranberries $2.47 (from $2.32)

All the typical ingredients added together will total $49.38 for 2011 compared to $45.79 for 2010

Staging to Sell

Here are a few more thoughts on where to spend your money or what to do with what you have when it comes to getting ready to sell your home!

1 - Updating fixtures - You can renew the look of a room just by replacing old or outdated light fixtures, door knobs, light switches, faucets. Here's a good rule of thumb - if it's older than you - it's overdue for a switch up!

2 - Room/area transformations - The addition of a small armchair, table and lamp in a stairwell or landing can convert it into a cozy reading spot and add more liveable space!

If you have an unfinished basement - you can drape some fabric on the wall, get a carpet remnant and some throw pillows and create a yoga studio.

3 - Empty bedrooms - an inexpensive way to furnish a bedroom is to get a cheap bedframe and use an airmattress and nice linens to give purpose to the area

4 - Dated bathroom tile - did you know that you can now have tile professionally painted? Much cheaper and less messy than tearing out and replacing!

Veterans Day 2011

My Dad spent months at a time on a submarine during WWII. His brother was in the Baatan Death March in the Phillipines. Our family has great respect and gratitude for military service past, present and future. Today - I thought we would share a little history of the celebration of Veterans Day.......quoted from the army.mil website.

While many realize that Veterans Day, which always falls on November 11, is a day to honor our Veterans, few realize the historical significance behind the day.

Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day and marked the end of hostilities of World War I that occurred at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. Therefore, the day is always recognized on November 11th, regardless of the day of the week the 11th falls on.

In 1919, President Wilson commemorated the first Armistice Day with these words:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations..."

The day was originally set aside to honor the Veterans of World War I with a day of parades and remembrances as well as a pause in activities at 11am on the day.

In 1938, it was made a legal federal holiday for all.

However, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress recognized a need to expand the meaning of the day to recognize all of our Veterans and not just those of World War I.

In 1954, the word "Armistice" was replaced with "Veterans" as a way to formally include all Veterans of all American wars in the day of remembrance.

Today, Veterans Day is a federal holiday which many cities celebrate with parades and ceremonies.

In Washington, D.C., there are ceremonies throughout the city including a wreath laying at Arlington National Cemetery.

Veterans Day is a day not only to remember those who died in service to our country, but also to recognize those who continue to serve today.

Americans are encouraged to say thank you to those who fulfill this patriotic duty to maintain the freedoms of our country.

Staging - The Home Sellers Buzz Word

Don't confuse "staging" with "decorating". Decor is an expression of a style. Staging is a strategy to attract buyers in order to sell your home.

Here's just some of our favorite thoughts beyond the common sense ones we all hear about - like curb appeal and de-cluttering and sparkling clean.

1. Floating furniture - There is common belief that if you push all your furniture against the walls around the room it will appear larger. Instead, try floating the furniture away from the walls, allowing walking space all around the furniture and creating conversational groupings with your sofa and chairs.

2. Musical furniture - Give yourself permission to move furniture, artwork and accessories on a whim. Repurposing a chair or a small table or picture might create a different feel in a room

3. By painting adjacent rooms the same color - both rooms will appear larger. Using the same color in your window treatments will further enhance this feeling.

4. Hanging everything at the standard eye line around a room can make them disappear. Try displaying your artwork creatively and it will stand out and show off the space.

5. Three's Company - Mixing accessories make a room inviting. Odd numbers (3) are preferable. Put them in triangles mixing scale while maintaining unity in either texture or color.

Central Indiana Housing Report for the Third Quarter of 2011

The following info is compiled by our own Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors for Central Indiana. Remember that Real Estate is LOCAL - so get your news here - not from the national media.

The 3rd Quarter provided the brightest picture of the year for central Indiana's housing consumers. Closed Sales were up 24.1%. Both Median and Average Sales Prices rose 4.1% in the quarter, consistent with the price stability seen all year. New Listings were down 15% in the 3rd quarter which helped to bring inventory levels down 7.7%. Months of Supply of Inventory still stands higher than sellers would like at 9.9 for the quarter.

This market stability coupled with the favorale mortgage environment is good news for both buyers and sellers. To keep momentum going into the final months of 2011, housing experts will pin hopes on more positive jobs news.

And again......

It's been said that trying to describe the national housing market is akin to trying to summarize the national weather forecast. There is no such thing. While national averages may have their place in some scenarios, truly all real estate is local.

Halloween By The Book

Remember the good ole days of Halloween and Trick or Treating? (showing my age here)

We would set out shortly after dinner with pillow cases. Running full tilt from house to house, filling a pillow case, then running home to dump and run back out. Word would get out on the street as to which houses had the extra special treats. I remember a year where someone had made popcorn balls and there was a mad rush to their house - like the grand opening of Nordstrom Rack. We were FEARLESS at the time of year when it was all about being scared.

Now - fear has taken over the whole event. Kids don't go out without parents, treats are checked over before consumption and people buy or rent costumes instead of creating them.

But I digress. There is still joy to be found in the enthusiasm of those small ghosts and goblins. And in keeping with the times - many cities actually have posted "trick or treating" hours. Here is a compiled list of what we could find.

Heartland Film Festival - Truly Moving Pictures - October 13th - 22nd

They say that the color of a room can affect your mood.

Here's the color spectrum analysis from the experts:

Purple: Stimulates brain activity. For the den perhaps?

Blue: Slows pulse rate, lower body temp. Sounds like a definite possibility for bedrooms, but beware of the shade of blue - and lean toward the darker hues.

Green: Soothing effect. Symbolizes renewal, youth, vigor. Sounds good for my bathroom!

Yellow: Happiness, optimism. Supposedly your brain will release more serotonin when the eye takes in yellow. I have a yellow VW Bug - and it seems to bring out violence, because I see lots of kids slugging their friends when I drive by.

Orange: Energy and warmth. Once again - beware the shade...and go toward the muddy orange. Dining room or rec room perhaps?

Red: Energy, excitement. Red is often associated with love - so it could be a good choice for adult bedrooms and dining rooms.

White: Peace, simplicity, spaciousness. Beware too much white - might make a room cold - but can be a great contrast to an accent wall.

Black: A great accent color in or out - but too much can be depressing

Location, location , location ......it's all about where you put what color.........

Prudential CARES and Gives Back

Real Estate is the most costly investment that most people will make in their lifetime. We wanted you to know that we all make an effort to give back to our communities.

Prudential agents are encouraged to volunteer with local non-profit groups. If they log at least 40 hours in one year, The Prudential Foundation will give a $250 grant to that organization.

The first Saturday of October, every year is our Global Volunteer Day. Agents are encouraged to participate in either organizing their own event for that day, or participating in a community service project that is already scheduled. There are $1,000.00 grants available for these events.

During July and August of each year, our offices participate in the Backpack Challenge where we fill backpacks with school supplies for children in foster care.

Spirit of Community Awards are given to middle and high school students who participate in community service projects.

Indiana Housing Indicators - From Indiana Association of Realtors

July 2011 showed progress. June had an increase in pendings that translated into closings in July - AND the total number of closings and the median sales price are both up. July pending numbers are up also making it the third consecutive increase - so hopefully that will translate into increased closings in August. These figures compare July of 2011 to July of 2010: # of Closed sales up 23.9% and Median Sales price up 4.3%.

When you do YTD (year to date) comparisons, the story changes a bit. BUT you have to remember the impact of the federal home buyer tax credit of 2010. When you compare 2010 YTD to 2011 YTD is shows a 10% decline in pendings and no change to the Median Sales price.

Until the impact of the of the tax credit recedes and the overall economy improves, optimism will be tempered and comparisons will be distorted. It is important to remember that the closing deadline for the tax credit was extended to September 30, 2010 - so the soonest an honest year to year comparison can be made will be October of 2012.

For the next year it is MOST important to pay attention to history. What you'll see is that housing in Indiana has been an overall stable investment. We haven't experienced the same intense rollercoaster ride as some other states.

A child goes missing every 40 seconds in America. Now there's a free tool from the FBI that can help. The first mobile app created by the FBI provides a place to electronically store photos and vital info about your children so that it's at hand when you need it. You can show pictures and provide physical identifiers to security or police on the spot. You can quickly and easily email info to authorities with a few clicks.

There are tips on keeping children safe and guidance on what to do in those first few crucial hours. Share the word about this app with family and friends. Right now, the Child ID app is only available for iPhones and can only be downloaded for free from the App Store on iTunes, but they plan to expand this tool to other types of mobile devices in the very near future.

Another great resource to help a child protect him or herself in an emergency. A list of adult contacts who have agreed to help in case of emergency are loaded into an app. If a child feels desperate and needs immediate help they can hit the red button and it alerts all adults on the list with the location taken from the phone GPS.

Those on the list have the option to call for help, calling the child or rushing to the location.

There are also 2 buttons the child can use to let parents know when they arrive at a location safely or a button for non-desperate need for assistance.

International Wine Competition in Indiana?

Yes - I said WINE COMPETITION and INDIANA in the same sentence!

This is actually the 20th annual event AND Huber Orchard and Winery's (Borden, IN) Catawba Rose was named best international rose wine of the year! Indiana wines took home 223 medals at this years event. Huber also received the Governor's Cup for being the Indiana winery of the year.

Nearly 2,500 wines from 35 states and 15 countries were judged in this year's competition. Winery of the year went to E & J Gallo Winery of Modesto, CA (2nd year in a row).

Christian Butzke, professor enology and chief judge stated "The quality of Indiana wines stood out against thousands of entries from all over the world. We had many truly spectacular wines this year, and the winners can be very proud of their exceptional winegrowing and winemaking skills."

This even takes place at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.

Indiana Housing Market Stats - Get Your Info LOCALLY

There's always plenty of media coverage about the housing market. Some optimistic and most commonly it is quite the opposite. The GOOD news is that local data is more reliable than national sound bites. The true message may not come from the expected indicators - instead it is best heard from a variety of segments at diffrent times.......for example:

The rate of inventory absorption in Indiana slowed in June increasing our supply by 20.8% to 11.6 months. New listings decreased 6.9% and pending sales increased 16.4%. Even though inventory levels decreased by 1.5%, buyers can still find top-notch homes for great prices.

Prices stayed fairly stable. Median Sales Price increased 1.4% to $119,000 for the state.

On the national front - intrest rates dropped to 4.79% for a 30 year fixed conventional loan and 4.44% for an FHA loan. Unemployment inched up to 9.2% even though unemployment claimed continued to fall. Prolonged job growth is still the missing player in this game.

In regards to the counties that we serve - here are some micro stats comparing 2nd Quarter of 2011 to the 2nd Quarter of 2010

There's a Choice Now for Indiana Education

Indiana's new voucher program gives Hoosier families the opportunity to send their children to a school that best meets their learning needs. A voucher or "Choice Scholarship" is a state payment that qualifying families can use to offset tuition costs at participating schools. Students qualify based on total household income and the amount of the scholarship corresponds with the public school corporation in which the student lives.

The most limiting factor is that there is a statewide ceiling of 7,500 students for 2011/12. Applications will be processed on first come, first served basis and there will not be quotas for any school or county.

Schools and parents work together to submit applications and enroll students. There are eligibility requirements and household income limits (based on family size and income combined).

Holiday World and Splashin Safari - Southern Indiana - Always Worth The Trip

With a heat index of 116 yesterday, I ran across an article about Holiday World/Splashin Safari and was ready to head south and hang out in the wave pool.
Indiana is priviledged to have this awesome combo park within our borders. Family owned and operated and an award winner year after year - the Koch family has made their mark. Voted cleanest park, best wooden roller coaster, friendliest park year after year - it's a jewel in our Indiana tiara.

The matriarch of the kingdom is Pat Koch who was born in 1931 in nearby Mariah Hill, IN. Pat's father played Santa at events in Santa Claus Land, IN for years and helped write responses to all the letters received at the post office from hopeful children. Louis Koch opened Santa Claus land back in 1946 and worked there 6 days a week until he was 90 years old. His son Bill took over operations in 1948 and married Pat in 1960. They developed lake Rudolph Camp, Christmas Lake Village and Santa's Elves to assure the continuation of the responses to children writing to Santa. They changed the name of the park in 1984 to Holiday World. Their son Will became president in 1987 and added Splashin Safari in 1993.

There have been hardships in the family but that has never daunted Pat's spirit. Her oldest son Will died suddenly in 2010 and her husband died in 2001. Still, she is at the park every day it is open during the busy months greeting guests, cleaning restrooms and helping in busy lines.
The parks have that "just right" size for families. Free drinks and free sunscreen make it very wallet friendly!!! Whether you are a roller coaster enthusiast or a poolside observer - there is something for everyone.
Don't let another summer go by without taking a trip to Santa Claus Land, Indiana and visting Pat and her legacy.

The 5th Annual CarmelFest Freedom Run is a 4 mile run that will take place on July 2. The course will wind through Carmel neighborhoods and the Monon Trail, finishing at the parade. The run begins at 8am at Carmel High School, with a peewee run at 9:15am. Registration is $20 per person before June 29th and $23 after that date. Peewee run is free to those under 10. Each participant gets a patriotic t-shirt, bib number, goodie bag, and post-race refreshments.

The Indiana Historical Society presents Concerts on the Canal this July 4. The concert will New Orleans rhythm and blues, boogie woogie from Craig Brenner and the Crawdads. The Indianapolis Municipal Band will perform a large concert of patriotic tunes. Come out and celebrate from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Admissions is free and reservations are available. The Tenderloin Trail

The County Fairs are starting soon - but it will be a while before the State Fair - so I thought I would focus on another fried food midwest favorite - the Tenderloin.

There are many who lay claim to having "the best". These three have actually earned that title in print many times.

First - Nick's Kitchen in Huntington, IN

Nick Freinstain opened this as a sandwich cart in 1908. The original pork tenderloin is still on the menu which are as large as the plate on which they're served. The pork loin is flattened and marinated for 24 hours, then deep-fried and served on a warm bun.

Second Stop - Lemon Drop Diner in Anderson, IN

This diner only has 4 booths and a few bar stools and Bill Pitts (owner) still flips and fry's himself. Since 1954 the decor hasn't changed and neither has the secret blend of seasonings for the tenderloins served with their signature skinny fries. There is even a Facebook group called "If the Lemon Drop isn't in Heaven, I don't wanna go".

Last Stop - Nickel Plate Bar and Grill in Fishers, IN

This restaurant opened as a saloon in the 1880's and maintains its exposed brick walls and archways to continue it's history. It was named for the Railroad that use to pass through the area. The tenderloin is the top seller with another secret recipe for the breading and deep friend in Canola oil.

"The best" in regards to food is personal opinion - but these three have an overwhelming consensus from their patrons over the years.

Lowes has partnered with American Forests for the giveaway. Each tree will be bar-coded so you can register your tree online (Lowes.com/earthday) and see where the other trees are being planted across the country.

Be a part of making the future a better place. These trees will produce more than 260 million pounds of oxygen per year which will provide air for more than 670,000 individuals for a year.

Pacers in the NBA Playoffs

For the first time since 2006, the Pacers are in the NBA Playoffs. They clinched the spot by defeating the Washington Wizards on Aprisl 6th by a wide margin of 132-112.

The Colts have certainly dominated the sports headlines in the Hoosier state over the last years, so perhaps it is time for a Pacers comeback. The coach and the team seem to have won back some respect in the State and in the sport.

There is a best of 7 series. The Pacers gave the Bulls a scare on their home court during the first game - so we need to keep that energy going and give them a "Butler" backing as a community.

Butler University - More than Basketball!

I feel compelled to highlight Butler University, since their Basketball team is making national headlines again this year after making it to the final four!
They have done something that many would say is impossible. They have enabled IU, Purdue, Notre Dame, ISU and Ball State fans to unite in one home, church, bar or sports arena and cheer for the same team!

Butler was founded in 1855 by Ovid Butler, an attorney and abolitionist. It sits on 290 acres in an Indianapolis near northside neighborhood just 5 miles from downtown and right in the middle of a residential area known as Butler-Tarkington. It is hailed as one of the most attractive campuses in the Midwest for it's park-like setting.

The University offers over 65 majors and in the last 5 years it has enjoyed a 96% job placement rate for it's graduates. The schools of education and pharmacy have a 100% placement rate. There are MANY worthy Not-For-Profit organizations in our service areas. I am going to try to highlight them on a regular basis. What better use of space??!!!!

Our chapters here in Indiana are part of the 400 agencies who partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

I've seen this program personally having 2 close friends participate - and it works!

They provide quality one-to-one mentoring relationships for youth ages 8-18 and adult volunteer mentors ages 21 and older. Youth enrolled in the program face challenges that most often include living in poverty; having an incarcerated family member; living with guardians or single parents; and a high need for the guidance and friendship of a caring adult role model.

A 2009 survey of the program alumni found that 42% of former Littles earned a four year college detree, and nearly half of all Littles had household incomes of more than $75,000.

It is a worthwhile organization for your donations and for your time!

Homebuying Hope For Lower Credit Scores

Wells Fargo is providing FHA mortgages to borrowers with credit scores as low as 500. Most of the major banks have been requiring credit scores of at least 650 in some cases. At the National Association of Realtors annual conference in New Orleans, FHA Cmmissioner David Stevens stated these policies were out of sync with the FHA and artificially restrained home sales by as much as 20%.

Under Wells Fargo new policy, they will accept borrowers with credit scores of 500-579 if those borrowers can make a down payment of at least 10% - and gifted funds or down payment assistance is not allowed. For borrowers with credit scores of 580-599, borrowers must put down 5% with the same restrictions on gifts or assistance funds. Borrowers with credit scores of 600 or higher can make a 3.5% down payment.

This new policy actually took effect on January 15, 2011.

Valentines Day - a little background

Originally known as St. Valentine's day, it was shortened over the years, but the thought is still the same. It's a day to celebrate love. The day is supposedly named after an early Christian martyr (or possibly several) by the name of Valentine. They really had no romantic association. It was first associated with romantic love during the Middle Ages when courtly love was popular.

Geoffrey Chaucer wrote "For this was Saint Valentines Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate". The same words were included in a poem that honored the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. Chaucers reference to Valentines Day would not explain the date - since February is not the time of year for bird mating. Chaucer makes it seem like an old traditin, although it doesn't appear to have existed prioer to his writing about it.

Where would love be without a little mystery?

Paris, the city of love, adopted a High Court of Love on February 14, 1400. This was run by women based on their poetry reading and writing abilities. The holiday flourished and England embraced the celebration with the forming of factories that assembled paper valentines.

Then of course, the hand written form gave way to the capitalization by numerous industries - candy, flowers, cards. It is now estimated that 190 million valentines are sent each year just in the U.S.

In my house when I was in grade school it was a flurry of activity to make sure you had a card for every child and taping those chalky hearts to your "special" friends.

Superbowl 2012 - Talk of the Town

The Indianapolis Superbowl Committee returned from Dallas with a motto of "expect the unexpected". Weather was certainly an unexpected element this year, but shouldn't be much of a surprise to Indianapolis nor should it present any insurmountable issues.

Here is some of the chat heard at the Dallas Superbowl:

Mike Golic, ESPN and Notre Dame grad stopped by to talk to some of the Hoosiers in town. He is and will be a great ambassador for Indianapolis and Indiana.

John Clayton, ESPN tells a tale about coming to Indy for the NFL a couple years ago with the beginnings of a bad cold. When the hotel receptionist noticed he had a cough, she surprised him less than 10 minutes later by sending chicken soup to his room - no charge, for that bit of Hoosier hospitality.

Peter King, Sports Illustrated said there are few places he'd rather go to cover a Super Bowl...except for San Diego. Considering the weather this year - it's no wonder.

Rick Gosselin, NFL writer waxes poetic about the virtues of Indianapolis' compact downtown, indoor walkways and unmatched services.

Roger Goodell, NFL Commissioner stopped by to tell the committee how special he thinks next year's Super Bowl is going to be.

Now if we can just make sure the players and the owners show up!

Indiana Goes Green - Funding for Urban Tree Planting

16 Indiana Cities will be receiving federal grants to plant trees in more than 850,00 vacant urban street and park tree spaces.

These cities include: Anderson, Bloomington, Brownsburg, Evansville, Franklin, Kendalville, Muncie, Noblesville, Rensselaer, Lafayette, Terre Haute, West Lafayette and Westfield.

The funding comes from a federal grant through the DNR (Department of Natural Resources).

Besides the funding, the urban forestry program will visit the municipalities to assess urban forestry needs, offer technical and educational assistance in order to establish an urban forestry management program and help communities become a Tree City USA.

These trees will provide a positive environmental impact as they improve air quality and help to decrease storm water runoff.

This info came from survey input from Realtors in 80 different cities who ranked the remodeling projects that brought the greatest cost recovered at resale.

1. Entry Door Replacement

Based on removing a 3 foot door and replacing with a new 20 gauge steel unit with side lights, jambs, threshold - professionally installed and fnished.

Cost recouped - 102.1%

2. Garage Door Replacement

Removing a 16x7 door and installing a new 4 section door reusing the existing garage door opener

Beware - it is easy to buy a more expensive product than is necessary. Consider how a potential buyer might use the garage.

Cost recouped - 83.9%

3. Siding Replacement

Replacing 1,250 sf of existing siding with cement siding, primed and painted.

Be sure you get cement siding. Ask the contractor how much overlap there will be. A 3" overlap gives a wood look rather than the max of 6" - which will also waste material and cost more money.

4. Kitchen Remodel

Replacing a functional, but dated 200sf kitchen with 30' of cabinetry and countertops - leaving cabinet boxes and replacing fronts with raised panel wood and hardware.

Too often, homeowners overimprove their kitchen - it's not cost effective unless they are staying in the home a long time.

Keep your wiring and plumbing. Consider painting your cabinets if that is an option. Many homeowners opt for laminate flooring - but this can be a negative to many buyers - consider a tile. Also consider a laminate countertop as an alternative - todays selections can mimic marble, granite or other natural stones.

5. Deck Addition

Adding a 16x20 deck with 4x4 post anchored to concrete piers.

A new wood deck can be stunning, but if not done professionally - could turn into a drawback. Be sure a new deck is not too small or too large.

E-Cycling - It's the Law as of 1/1/11 in Indiana

Effective January 1, 2011, Indiana households, public schools and small businesses will no longer be allowed to mix unwanted electronics with municipal waste that's intended for disposal at a landfill or by burning or incineration. This ban is being implemented in cooperation with state law.

The term used to describe the recycling of electrnoics is e-cycle. Everything from cell phones to computers need to be disposed of properly instead of thrown away. Electronics may contain hazardous materials such as lead and mercury. These materials, if buried in a landfill, can contaminate groundwatear and cause serious health issues for people. Drop in State Unemployment Rate and Remembering to Pay it Forward

The state's unemployment rate dropped 0.1 percent to 9.8 percent in November. This decline puts Indiana at the same rate as the nation. Indiana Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Mark Everson says the state's unemployment rate has decreased by four-tenths of a percent since the summer, compared to the U.S. rate which has been going up during the same period.

We hope that this will begin a continuing trend as we see other good news in regard to companies like Rolls Royce being awarded numerous military contracts, Exact Target and other companies announcing expansions and other state wide initiatives.

Indiana has set a record in the number of life science jobs attracted to the state. Twenty companies, including Dow Agro Sciences, AIT labs and Ascension Health told the state they plan to add 4,071 jobs over the next several years.

It's nice to have some positive news as the Holiday season is upon us. Many families are still struggling - so it is imperative that as we are blessed, we pay it forward to bless someone else.

Cummins Leader up For 'CEO of The Decade' The chief executive officer of Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) and DePauw University alumnus is one of five finalists for MarketWatch's "CEO of the Decade." Tim Solso is noted for spending 30 years at Cummins before landing the top job, then "30 months later he was struggling to save the company."

Cummins Making Big Investment in TurkeyColumbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) says it will invest $70 million in a multi-phased manufacturing operation in Turkey. The engine maker plans to first build a filtration manufacturing plant then a facility to produce alternators for its power generation business. Cummins says it expects to employ 800 people in Turkey within five years.

Solar Panel Company Chooses Columbus

A solar panel company plans to locate its first manufacturing facility in Columbus. NuSun Inc. says it anticipates creating 240 jobs by 2014 by investing nearly $9 million to purchase an existing facility. Columbus Mayor Fred Armstrong says there are still a few items that need to be put in place before the deal is finalized, including securing a state grant.

Gobble Up to the Table!

TURKEY:

The average cost of the traditional Thanksgiving feast for 10 people this year is $43.47. This includes a menu of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of coffee and milk.

Indiana ranks fifth in the nation for number of turkeys expected to be produced in 2010. Indiana is responsible for around 7 percent of total U.S. production.

Seventy-five percent of all turkey production comes from six states. The top six turkey producing states are: Minnesota (47 million), followed by North Carolina (31.0 million), Arkansas (28.0 million), Missouri (17.5 million), Indiana (16.0 million) and Virginia (15.5 million).

The value of all turkeys raised in Indiana in 2009 was $271.5 million. Indiana ranked fifth in value of turkeys raised, following Minnesota, North Carolina, Missouri and Arkansas.

There were 498 Indiana farms with turkeys in 2007. Dubois County leads the state in turkey inventory (followed by Daviess County) and is one of the top 10 turkey-producing counties in the nation.

SIDE DISHES AND DESSERTS:
Indiana's 2009 production of snap, or green, beans for processing (as opposed to sold fresh) weighed 15,650 tons. Last year's crop was a 19.5 percent increase over the 2008 crop. Indiana's 2009 production accounted for 1.9 percent of the nation's total and ranked Indiana eighth among states.

Surprisingly Indiana's share of U.S. fresh sweet corn production was just 1.5 percent with an output of 421,000 hundredweight in 2009, which was a 13.8 percent increase over 2008. (Note that a hundredweight is equal to 100 pounds.)

Indiana's 2009 production of cucumbers was valued at $3.5 million. Indiana's production weighed 9,620 tons and made up 1.8 percent of the nation's total production for processing. Indiana ranked eighth among states.

Value of Indiana's tomato crop for processing in 2009 was $36.3 million, from the production of 321,340 tons of tomatoes. Indiana ranks second in the production of tomatoes for processing and comprises 2.3 percent of the U.S. tomatoes for processing crop.

There were 13.8 million bushels of wheat produced in Indiana in 2010. Indiana's production is less than 1 percent of the nation's production of wheat (2.2 billion) whereas Kansas and North Dakota account for 33 percent of the nation's supply.

There were 6.46 billion eggs Indiana produced from December 2008 through November 2009. Indiana's egg production made up 7.1 percent of the U.S. total and ranks fourth in the nation.

Indiana produced 30 million pounds of apples, versus 5.5 billion pounds in Washington in 2009. Indiana's apple crop comprises 3 percent of U.S. production.

There were 3.7 million pounds of another popular dessert fruit, blueberries, produced in Indiana in 2009. Nationally, 364.1 million pounds of blueberries were produced.

GIVING THANKS:

On average 1.5 million Hoosiers volunteered in the state Indiana between 2007 and 2009, or about 29.9 percent of all residents. Indiana volunteers contributed 206.1 million hours of service each year, or 42 volunteer hours per resident. Nationally 26.5 percent of Americans volunteered (62.0 million) over this period, contributing 8.1 billion hours of service in communities across the country.

The amount of service contributed each year in volunteer hours in Indiana is valued at $4.3 billion. In Indianapolis $1.1 billion of service was contributed by 394,500 volunteers.

Nearly one-fourth, or 24.9 percent, of Indiana volunteers engage in fundraising -- the most popular activity. The remaining top three volunteer activities are collecting and distributing food (22.3 percent), general labor (19.4 percent) and tutoring or teaching (18.6 percent).

A Veterans Day Story

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and

Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and

Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible."

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
